About the data on this site

Every population, literacy, area and household figure on Village in India comes from the Census of India 2011, conducted by the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner under the Ministry of Home Affairs. We do not collect survey data ourselves and we do not estimate or interpolate numbers.

Why 2011 and not something newer

The census due in 2021 was postponed and has not been completed. Until a newer one is published, the 2011 round remains the most recent complete enumeration of Indian villages, and it is still what government departments cite for village level figures. Actual populations today are higher in most places, particularly near towns and along highways, so treat these numbers as a fixed historical record rather than a current count.

How the pages are organised

The site follows the administrative hierarchy the census itself uses: state, then district, then tehsil, then village. The middle tier is called a tehsil here throughout, but the same unit is called a taluka in much of western India, a mandal in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, and a block or circle elsewhere. District and tehsil boundaries have changed since 2011 in several states, so a district that exists today may not appear here, and one listed here may since have been split.

How figures are derived

Population, male and female counts, literacy and area are reproduced as recorded, without rounding.
Sex ratio is calculated as females per 1000 males from the recorded counts. Child sex ratio uses the same formula restricted to children aged 0 to 6.
Growth rate compares the 2001 and 2011 counts. A negative figure means the population fell over the decade, and is shown as a fall rather than as growth.
Where a field was not recorded, we leave the row out rather than printing a zero or a placeholder.

Known limits

Village names in census records are transliterations, and the same settlement is often spelt several ways. Small hamlets are frequently counted inside a larger revenue village rather than listed separately, so a settlement you know by name may not have its own page. Facility fields such as bus service or the nearest railway station record what was noted by the enumerator in 2011 and may not describe the village today.
